ToolWhat the comparison is for

n8n vs. Make vs. Zapier: which tool fits you.

Before you commit to an automation tool, an honest look at the differences is worth it. Zapier, Make and n8n solve similar tasks, but they differ on data protection, AI capability, flexibility and operation. This interactive comparison shows the criteria side by side and helps you find the tool that fits your case. We ourselves prefer to build on n8n because it runs self-hosted and grows up to AI agents and your own products, but the comparison stays honest and names where Make or Zapier are stronger.

Recommendation widget: n8n, Make or Zapier

Four short questions and a recommendation on which automation tool fits your case.

01 Must data stay in the EU or be self-hosted?
02 Do you need AI agents or custom code in the workflow?
03 Do you want to grow the automation into a product later?
04 How important is a very low learning curve?

Possible results

  • n8n
  • Zapier
  • Make

The recommendation is an orientation based on the four answers, not a binding plan. The comparison matrix shows all criteria side by side.

The calculation runs only in your browser, nothing is transmitted or stored.

How the tool calculates
  • If question 1 = yes or question 2 = yes or question 3 = yes, the recommendation is n8n.
  • Otherwise, if question 4 = very and all other answers = no, the recommendation is Zapier.
  • Otherwise the recommendation is Make as a flexible middle path.

How to read the matrix

Zapier is the fastest to set up and has the most ready integrations, ideal for simple, cloud-based connections without special data protection needs. Make offers more visual flexibility and a cheaper operation model for more complex flows. n8n is the right choice when data protection, self-hosting, AI agents or growth to your own product matter. Because its source is available and it can run on your server, your data stays within your control, and there is no lock-in. The honest point is that for a simple trigger between two cloud apps, Zapier is often faster to the goal. But as soon as language, sensitive data or growth come into play, n8n clearly wins.

Interactive recommendation widget

A small widget asks three to four questions and recommends a tool from the answers. Purely client-side, no storage.

  • Question 1: Must data stay in the EU or be self-hosted? (yes / no)
  • Question 2: Do you need AI agents or custom code in the workflow? (yes / maybe / no)
  • Question 3: Do you want to grow the automation into a product later? (yes / no)
  • Question 4: How important is a very low learning curve? (very / medium / not)

FAQ

Why do you prefer n8n?

Because it runs self-hosted in Germany or the EU, has available source code and can be freely extended with AI and custom code. That keeps your data within your control, there is no lock-in, and the automation can grow up to AI agents and your own product. For simple cloud connections, Zapier can still be faster.

When is Zapier or Make the better choice?

When you need a simple connection between two cloud apps without special data protection needs, Zapier is often the fastest. Make offers more visual flexibility at medium complexity. But as soon as EU data, AI agents or growth matter, n8n plays to its strengths.

Can I switch from Zapier or Make to n8n later?

Yes. Many teams start with a cloud tool and switch to n8n when data protection or AI become more important. We help rebuild the existing workflows and recreate them self-hosted, so you regain control over data and operation.

Is n8n harder to use?

The learning curve is a bit higher than Zapier, but manageable. The gain in flexibility, data protection and extensibility usually outweighs it. And you do not have to learn it alone, we build the workflows and train your team on request so you build on yourselves later.
