RAG (Retrieval Augmented Generation): definition, value and limits

Definition

RAG (Retrieval Augmented Generation) connects a language model to a search in your own documents. Before answering, the system pulls matching passages from a knowledge source and hands them to the model as context. So the AI answers based on your data instead of general training. As a block in an automation, this gives current, verifiable answers that fit into a workflow.

Why the Term Matters

A model alone only knows what was in its training and, in doubt, invents answers that sound plausible. RAG flips this: search first, then phrase. It works like an open-book exam where the AI looks things up instead of guessing from memory. For teams that want to turn an internal flow into their own tool, RAG is often the core, because answers stay tied to your source.

When It Is Relevant

  • Answers should rest on your manuals, tickets or contracts.
  • The knowledge base changes and the model should not answer from an outdated state.
  • Traceability matters and every statement should point to a source.
  • An internal search should become an assistant feature or MVP.

When Not

When the needed information already sits in the model or fits into a few sentences, building a search layer is effort without gain. For very small, rarely changed knowledge sets it often suffices to put the text directly into the prompt. RAG pays off once the knowledge base is large, changing or requires evidence.

Industries That Use It

  • Insurance: case work that searches policy wording and returns answers with a reference.
  • Mechanical engineering: technical documentation and service manuals as a searchable knowledge source.
  • Law firms: research across your own case and precedent files without switching systems.
  • Software support: merge answers from your own docs and from solved tickets.

Typical Use Cases

  • An internal assistant that answers from manuals and FAQ and names the source.
  • Automatic suggested replies in support, backed by earlier cases.
  • A retrieval step in an n8n flow that fetches context before the model writes.
  • Checking incoming documents against an internal rule or knowledge base.
  • An MVP that opens your knowledge base as a chat surface for customers.

Example

A team builds answer logic in a self-hosted n8n flow that first searches the matching paragraphs from the internal knowledge base and then gives them to a model as context. Every answer points to the passage used, and a check flags cases without a clear hit. From this flow, a small product for customer service later emerges. This describes the method, not an asserted metric.

Service Connection

RAG usually takes shape within a workflow automation or n8n build, and the extension into a product leads to MVP development.

Sources

This framing describes common RAG practice. The build of the search layer, data protection and hosting depend on the case, the systems and the tools used and must be checked case by case.

FAQ

Does RAG prevent invented answers?

It lowers the risk clearly, because the model works from real passages instead of memory. The risk is not gone entirely, so a check step belongs to it that flags answers without a clear hit. Quality depends strongly on how well the knowledge base is maintained and searchable.

What does RAG need technically?

Usually a vector database for the search, a step that turns documents into embeddings, and a language model for phrasing. In a flow tool like n8n these parts can be chained. That keeps the build manageable and lets it grow into its own product later.

Does our data stay internal?

That depends on the setup. With self-hosted components and EU hosting the knowledge base stays in a controlled environment. Which models are called externally and which data they see we set deliberately and check per case.
